What HVO is

HVO stands for hydrotreated vegetable oil — a renewable diesel made by treating vegetable oils and waste fats with hydrogen. The result is a paraffinic diesel, sold to a different standard (EN 15940) from ordinary forecourt diesel.

⭐ HVO is not biodiesel in the FAME sense, and it is not a blend. The biodiesel in B7 and B10 is FAME, a different chemistry made a different way. HVO is a distinct product — which is exactly why it gets its own code rather than a bigger number after the B.

Is it sold at UK petrol stations?

Only at a small number of them. Most HVO in the UK goes to fleets, plant, generators and heating rather than to public pumps. In the data behind this site, 0 of 8,077 forecourts report a price for HVO.
